Ramadan - Salaam Alaykum!
2016 Jun 10th
Ramadan is a month long period where Muslims around the world spend all daylight hours in fast, withholding from all food and drink. Ramadan takes place during the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Why the ninth month? It is believed that during this time, Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur’an- the holy book of Islam. Alongside Testimony of Faith, Prayer, Alms-giving, and Pilgrimage, it is one of the five Pillars of Islam. Meaning, the five most important things that shape a person’s life. It is a month to purify the soul, practice self-discipline, and refocus your devotions to God.
The word “fast” is directly connected to the Arabic meaning for “refrain.” During Ramadan, all parts of the human body must refrain, not just the stomach. The tongue must refrain from gossip and ill words, the eyes from unjustly sights, the ears from obscene and unpleasant talk, the feet from sinful places, and the hand must always give in charity and in kindness. The physical effects of the fast are to better help an individual identify and sympathize with those who are hungry and in refuge.
At the end of Ramadan, this year falling on the 17th of July, and the end of the fast, Muslims celebrate with a festival of Eid al-Fitr. Meaning, “a feast of fast breaking.” As one of two most important celebrations in Islamic culture, Eid begins with prayer, donations of goods to the poor and to the Mosque. People dress in their finest clothing, beautify their homes in lights and decoration, give gifts to children and enjoy the company and gaiety of friends and family. The festivities are always complimented by the gratitude and bounty that fills the hearts of its celebrators.
